First cochlear implant placement with the RoboticScope® in Italy

Between November 6th and 18th, the operating team led by Prof. Stefano Pelucchi at the University Hospital Sant'Anna in Ferrara completed numerous ENT surgeries, including the first otologic surgeries - cochlear implantations, to be more exact - with RoboticScope® in Italy. We are proud to be presenting few pictures about the operations, as well as a free translation of an Italian press release written by the hospital Sant'Anna:

“This is a device that combines 3D digital visualisation, robotic technology and the features of the surgical microscope. And thus, allows the three-dimensional viewing instrument (HMD) to be driven by the surgeon's head movements. This enables the surgeon to optimize the view of the surgical field even during procedures, where it would - with conventional techniques, require long lasting, tiring and unergonomic operating position.

The first two of the six surgeries, performed with RoboticScope® in Ferrara, were performed on 6th of November on a 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, successfully placing a cochlear implant. A cochlear implant is an electronic hearing implant, which is able to restore hearing in people with profound deafness. This type of implant is used when traditional hearing devices do not achieve desired results. During the following two weeks, also other complex otologic surgeries and an operation for a neoplasm of the parotid gland were performed. To learn the usage and to get comfortable with RoboticScope®, the surgeons performed simulation tests on models before the operations.

The advantages for patients undergoing these types of interventions with the help of RoboticScope® are not to be outdone. They can, thanks to the method, benefit from an even more precise surgical procedure.”“

Normally, a conventional microscope would be used for this type of surgery. In that case, to reach and obtain the best possible view on the OR-Field the surgeon would need to adjust the microscope manually by removing his hands off the OR-field.

RoboticScope® transforms the magnification of the OR-Field into a 3D view, controlled by only the head movements of the medical professional. This ensures that the view of the surgical field is never interrupted and that no uncomfortable positions are required for operations that may last for hours. In addition, the possible double vision allows, even for those who help and are learning, to have the same 3D view to the OR-field as the operator: this greatly improves the learning curve.
