Intracranial tumor resections with RoboticScope®

“Resection of Intracranial Tumors with a Robotic-Assisted Digital Microscope: A Preliminary Experience with RoboticScope” (Piloni M et al., 2021)

The article reports about the first (by the time of the data collection) neurosurgical procedures, carried out with RoboticScope®. Three patients with intracranial frontal tumors were operated in September 2020 at the Department of Neurosurgery of the San Raffaele Hospital (Milan, Italy) by senior author Professor Pietro Mortini, M.D.

The report critically reviews and discusses the potential of the RoboticScope® in neurosurgical visualisation. Moreover, it includes personal feedback from the surgeons as well as measurements of surgery times.

As depicted by the reported evidence, it is reasonable to expect promising results from this robotic digital device as viable alternative to traditional operating microscopes and other telescopic visualisation tools.

As stated in the publication the outcome was positive as during the three surgeries no intra- or postoperative complications were determined and also the duration of the microsurgical portion was found to be comparable to any similar intervention.

Especially highlighted in this study was, that the RoboticScope® allows an improvement in personal comfort and freedom of surgical movement. Thus, it can help overcoming the limitations associated with unnatural and nonergonomic postures. According to the research team, hands-free control enables an unprecedented opportunity for a seamless workflow and could therefore lead to significant reduction in operative time in the future.
